Why the Change?
As part of HMRC’s continued efforts to protect taxpayer data, they have now stopped providing Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) numbers over the phone. This measure is designed to prevent identity fraud and enhance the overall security of personal tax information.
β How Can You Find Your UTR Now?
Although you can no longer get your UTR number by calling HMRC, there are several secure ways to locate it:
-
HMRC App
Download and log into the official HMRC app to view your UTR instantly. -
Personal Tax Account
Log into your HMRC Personal Tax Account β your UTR is displayed under the self-assessment section. -
Official Correspondence from HMRC
Your UTR is usually printed on:-
Self-assessment tax returns
-
Payment reminders
-
Notices to file a return
-
π¬ Still Canβt Find It?
If youβve exhausted the above options and still canβt find your UTR:
-
HMRC will send it by post
After answering a series of security questions, HMRC will post your UTR to your registered address. This ensures your data remains secure.
π£ For Tax Agents and Accountants
If youβre a tax agent contacting HMRC on behalf of a client:
-
Youβll be advised on where the UTR can typically be found.
-
If not located, HMRC will send the UTR directly to your clientβs address.
-
Please note: postal delivery may take up to 2 weeks.
π§Ύ What Is a UTR and Why Do You Need It?
A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC to identify taxpayers who are registered for self-assessment. Itβs required for:
-
Filing self-assessment tax returns
-
Registering for self-employment
-
Working with accountants or tax agents
-
Dealing with any HMRC correspondence
